Dr. John Choi is a Melbourne orthopaedic spine surgeon with an international fellowship training in complex spine surgery.
He completed his medical degree at Otago University with Faculty Scholarship. During his final year he was awarded prestigious Otago-Scandinavia Research Fellowship that took him to Karolinska Institute, Stockholm in Sweden to complete a project on hypoxic injuries of neonates at the Alfred Nobel Research lab in Huddinge Hospital.
He began his orthopedic training after completing his internship and surgical residency at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and during this time, he traveled to several Victorian and Tasmanian hospitals gathering wide variety of surgical experiences.

Dr. Choi then relocated to Wagga Wagga, NSW to complete a fellowship in Arthroplasty and Trauma surgery administered by Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA).

Following this experience, he embarked on an international spine fellowship training starting at the world renowned Hong Kong University under the leadership of Prof. Kenneth Cheung (SRS president) and Prof. Keith Luk (ISSLS & SICOT president). It was here, Dr. Choi gained valuable experiences in deformity surgery in particular among children and adolescents.

Dr. Choi also traveled to South Korea to St. Mary’s Hospital through an AO Spine Fellowship under the supervision of Prof. Ha Kee Yong to gain experiences in Minimally Invasive Surgery in particular focusing on DLIF, SIJ fusions, Adult Scoliosis and Microscopic spinal surgeries. He was a recipient of Spine Society of Australia Fellowship Prize whilst in Seoul, South Korea.

Furthermore, Dr. Choi was also the recipient of Kokubun Spine Fellowship in Japan at Tohoku University mastering the management of spinal tumours and complex cervical spine disease such as OPLL, myelopathy, OFL and spinal cord injuries.

Dr. Choi is an accomplished surgeon with great repute and is actively involved in research and education of surgeons locally and globally. He has hosted over 35 international visiting spine surgeons to educate and has a regular training spine fellowship since 2017.

He also has chaired several international spine meetings and regularly invited to offer education, consulting and advocacy services by various industry partners and professional organisations.

In 2017, Dr. Choi was involved in Pro-Bono charity surgery work in Vietnam and treated three patients with life changing operations and is committed to ongoing assistance in outreach efforts.

Also Dr. Choi holds international intellectual patents and property rights to surgical implants and instruments that are in the marketplace around the world and is actively involved in innovation and development.

He is fluent in English and Korean.

He is an avid golfer and a soccer tragic.
