Dr. Raghad Barri
I had the privilege of being Dr. Choi’s fellow for nine months, an experience that has profoundly shaped both my surgical expertise and personal growth. Throughout this time, I have gained invaluable knowledge in spine surgery, particularly in minimally invasive techniques, including biportal endoscopic spine surgery, robotic-assisted procedures, and anterior approaches.
Spine surgery is a continuously evolving specialty, and during my fellowship, I witnessed Dr. Choi performing novel procedures such as prone OLIF and robotic-assisted unilateral biportal endoscopy, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in minimally invasive spine surgery.
Dr. Choi’s mentorship extended beyond surgical skills, he instilled in me the importance of critical thinking, adaptability, and lifelong learning. He encouraged me to approach every case with curiosity and precision, always striving for the best possible outcome for the patient. His dedication to education has motivated me to continue evolving as a spine surgeon, ensuring that I remain at the forefront of this ever advancing field.
One of the most invaluable lessons I learned during this fellowship was to see beyond imaging and to treat the patient as a whole. Dr. Choi emphasized the importance of looking beyond the MRI scan and truly understanding the patient’s symptoms, concerns, and overall well-being. He taught me to approach each case with the same level of care and dedication as if the patient were my own family member.
This fellowship extended beyond the walls of the hospital, offering me remarkable opportunities for academic and international exposure. Through overseas visitations, cadaveric workshops, and hands-on courses, I had the privilege of learning from pioneers in spine surgery and engaging with leading surgeons from around the world. These experiences not only enriched my surgical skills but also allowed me to build invaluable professional relationships that will continue to shape my career.
To my mentor, thank you for believing in me, for pushing me to grow, and for shaping me into the surgeon I am today. Your guidance, patience, and dedication have left a mark on my professional and personal life. You have taught me not only how to be a better surgeon but also how to be a better person, one who leads with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
This fellowship has been more than just a chapter in my career; it has been a defining moment that will influence my path for years to come. I will carry forward the lessons, skills, and values you have instilled in me, always striving to uphold the high standards of excellence you have demonstrated.
I am, and will always be, deeply grateful for this experience.
