Dr. Hiroto Makino

I had the honor of being Dr Choi’s fellow for six months. This experience undoubtfully made me a better and tougher spine surgeon. During this time, I was able to acquire the latest spine surgery skills such as robotic-assisted surgery, unilateral biportal endoscopy, and anterior procedures. In addition, I gained knowledge essential for diagnosing and decision-making for spinal diseases.

Although spine surgery is still one of the challenging fields due to high complication rates and poor outcomes, I saw an entirely different practice with excellent outcomes, based on minimally invasive techniques, and Dr Choi’s firm confidence and right decisionmakings. These daily practices motivated me to work and learn hard

Dr. Choi always shows me the attitude to pursue updating practices. I experienced the introduction of a prone ATP surgery, even though his single position lateral spine surgery is completed and renowned procedure. He always seeks something new every day, which made me realize the importance of constant growth.

When talking about the advantages of this fellowship, one thing that cannot be overlooked is the extensive international exchange. I met different fellows and visitors and spent a lot of time with them, which improved us through friendly competition. I really appreciate Dr. Choi providing such opportunities.

Looking at experiences outside the clinics and theatre, participating in cadaveric workshops and international meetings which Dr. Choi taught and organized was a great opportunity to gain academic connections. Dr. Choi is familiar with the fun in Melbourne, which enabled me to eat out in a fancy restaurant, to drink amazing wines, and to go to luxurious events.

Finally, my first international fellowship was the right gateway to become an excellent spine surgeon, the place where I was able to closely spend my time with Dr. Choi. This is a new step for me as a spine surgeon and will be a lasting memory in my life.

I will never forget this precious experience and will always be grateful.
